Apple announced a significant policy shift on Thursday, unveiling plans to revamp how European Union users choose their default web browsers and app settings. The move comes in response to new regulations under the Digital Markets Act, which took effect on March 7.

Starting with a forthcoming update, users will encounter a 'choice screen' featuring a randomized list of 12 browsers the first time they open Safari. This will allow them to set a default browser more easily. The measure, which will also extend to iPads, aims to enhance user experience and comply with EU standards.

The European Commission, which previously expressed concern over Apple's compliance, welcomed the changes. The Commission will monitor the new measures' effectiveness in achieving their objectives. Apple also announced plans for a dedicated area to set default apps like messaging and phone calls and has expanded the list of deletable apps to enhance user control.
