Vedanta group firm Hindustan Zinc on Wednesday announced a strategic partnership with the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR) aimed at developing innovative zinc material variants tailored for zinc-based batteries.

These zinc-based batteries are emerging as a superior alternative to lithium counterparts, courtesy of their long-duration storage capacity, cost-effectiveness, durability, and a proven safety track record.

"Zinc is integral to a low-carbon future and it presents itself as a safe, stable and sustainable alternative to lithium in the energy storage segment," said Hindustan Zinc Ltd CEO, Arun Misra, in a statement, highlighting the growing significance of zinc-based primary batteries in both domestic and global markets.
