More than one billion people worldwide live with some form of disability, and nearly 200 million experience considerable difficulties in functioning, according to the 2011 edition of the World Report on Disability.

The vision of a world where disability doesn't bar these people from experiencing life to the fullest is closer than ever, thanks to a new generation of wearable robots. These ingenious machines, encompassing exoskeletons and prosthetics, have the potential to transform daily life for people with disabilities.

The initial wave of innovation focused on the core mechanics of these wearable robots, the interfaces with the human body, and intricate sensor systems. This resulted in remarkable progress, with robots that can now assist with fundamental tasks like grasping objects and walking on even terrain. However, to truly empower individuals with disabilities, these robots must evolve beyond mimicking physical actions - they need to understand and anticipate human intent.

A new paper published in Science Robotics sheds light on the critical need for novel vision approaches to enhance wearable robots. The research points out the limitations of current methods and emphasizes the potential of computer vision to revolutionize human-robot interaction.

Beyond physical actions

For a wearable robot to be genuinely helpful, it needs to go beyond basic mechanical functions. For instance, an ideal assistive glove wouldn't just clench around an object, it would anticipate what you intend to do with it, adjusting its grip for a delicate teacup or a hefty toolbox. 

Achieving this level of sophistication requires understanding the user's intent. So, how do we bridge this gap between physical action and user intent?

Current methods for deciphering intent in lower-limb prosthetics primarily rely on inertial sensors that track a user's movements. These sensors can detect basic patterns like heel strikes and walking gaits, but they struggle to grasp the nuances of complex actions.

Neuromuscular interfaces, such as electromyography (EMG) is another such approach, which measures electrical signals in muscles to understand user activity. For instance, EMG signals from the upper body of someone with a prosthetic arm can be used to control the prosthetic hand. However, the information gleaned is limited to basic actions like changes in walking speed or triggering a prosthetic hand closure. These limitations translate to a restricted range of tasks and a user experience that often feels clunky and unnatural. As a result, many users find these devices cumbersome and eventually abandon them.

Computer vision - how can it help?

To unlock a new frontier of assistance and vastly expand the range of tasks achievable with wearable robots, they must be equipped with information about the context in which movements occur. Here's where computer vision comes in.

According to the researchers, vision technology allows wearable robots to gather a wealth of rich, real-time data about their environment. Recent advancements in human pose estimation and action classification using machine vision can provide robots with valuable insights into human behavior. For instance, an exoskeleton equipped with machine vision can not only detect leg movements but also recognize when the user is about to climb stairs and adjust its support accordingly for a safe and efficient ascent.

Furthermore, robots can leverage existing solutions for environmental sensing, such as object recognition and simultaneous localization and mapping technologies. By combining these capabilities, wearable robots can provide more precise and effective assistance, tailored to the specific needs of individuals with disabilities.

Challenges

Fusing visual data with real-time context to infer user intent is a nascent field fraught with challenges. One approach, as the paper highlights, involves training complex machine learning systems using vast amounts of data that include video recordings, user-generated signals, and task outcomes. However, this throws up hurdles like accurately representing user intentions and labeling different levels of assistance.

Collecting diverse data to train these systems is another significant challenge. Wearable robots assist individuals with a wide range of motor capabilities, making it difficult to gather large datasets that reflect this diversity. Additionally, it remains uncertain whether data from healthy individuals can be effectively adapted to assist those with disabilities.

Developing new control algorithms that can process visual data quickly and integrate it into robotic actions is crucial for vision-based intent detection. This presents computational challenges, particularly concerning the processing power and battery life of wearable robots.

Safety and user privacy are paramount concerns as well. Visual occlusions, for instance, could lead to misinterpretations of intent, potentially resulting in injuries. Ensuring privacy is another concern, however, existing vision-based home rehabilitation systems that comply with data privacy regulations offer a roadmap for developing similar solutions for wearable robots.

Extensive market research is crucial to understand user perceptions and address any privacy anxieties, the paper says.

A Collaborative Approach 

The true potential of wearable robots lies in their ability to seamlessly blend user-generated data with real-time environmental information. This paves the way for the development of semi-autonomous control systems, where decisions are made collaboratively between user and machine transparently and intuitively.

Event-based cameras, with their ability to address bandwidth limitations and enable faster visual processing, hold immense promise for wearable robots. This synergy between user and machine will not only enhance physical capabilities but also empower individuals to reclaim a sense of agency and control over their movements.

This future of wearable robots is not just about enhanced gaits and stronger grasps - it's about augmenting human potential and creating a world where disability doesn't limit possibility.
