The prosecutor's office is examining whether Buhajeruk and coach Cristian Fabbiani aimed to attract illegal gamblers. The club issued an apology amid ethical concerns raised by the AFA.
The Argentine justice department has initiated an inquiry into potential ties to illegal sports betting following an unusual incident involving a social media influencer. Ivan Buhajeruk, known as Spreen with over 7 million YouTube subscribers, briefly played for top-flight team Deportivo Riestra in their match against leaders Velez Sarsfield, raising eyebrows and ethical concerns.
The 24-year-old, lacking any professional football credentials, was granted a professional contract by Buenos Aires club Deportivo Riestra and officially registered with the Argentine FA in February. The Specialized Prosecutor's Office on Gambling is now investigating whether coach Cristian Fabbiani and influencer Buhajeruk intended to draw gamblers to illegal platforms.
Both the club and the Argentine FA have remained tight-lipped over the betting probe, while the AFA has launched proceedings through its Ethics Tribunal. In response to the controversy, which many regarded as a marketing ploy, Deportivo Riestra issued an apology for any offense caused, asserting their respect for Argentine football.
