Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan awarded a Rs 2 crore cash prize to Olympic medalist goalkeeper P R Sreejesh, lauding his pivotal role in revitalizing Indian hockey. The ceremony, initially postponed, took place amidst controversy over a supposed clash between state departments.
In a Facebook post, Vijayan stated that Sreejesh elevated Kerala's reputation through his performance at the Paris Olympics, marking a comeback for Indian hockey. Sreejesh has also been appointed as a coach for the national junior hockey team, a testament to his expertise and value to the sport.
The celebration had been delayed due to an alleged disagreement between the General Education and Sports Departments, leading to criticism from the opposition Congress. Sreejesh's retirement came after helping secure India's successive Olympic bronze, ensuring his legacy continues in a coaching role.
