The much-anticipated Hockey India League (HIL) is making a grand comeback after a seven-year break, this time including both men's and women's competitions. Starting December 28, the league will unfold across two venues—Rourkela and Ranchi—running until February 1.
The men's league will feature eight teams, while six teams will compete in the inaugural women's event. A player auction scheduled from October 13 to 15 will see athletes bidded for in three categories, offering financial rewards ranging from Rs 2 lakh to Rs 10 lakh. Notably, HIL aims to significantly boost women's hockey in India.
Hockey India president Dilip Tirkey expressed his delight at realizing his dream of reviving the league, emphasizing its role in developing national team talents. The International Hockey Federation has granted a 35-day window for the league, which has also extended sponsorship from the Odisha government until 2036.
