Billy Horschel clinched the BMW PGA Championship in a gripping three-man playoff against Rory McIlroy and Thriston Lawrence at Wentworth on Sunday, earning $1.53 million.
The trio finished at 20-under par, with Lawrence falling out after a bogey on the 18th. McIlroy sought a second title after his 2014 win, but Horschel secured victory with a decisive eagle putt, becoming the first American to claim the championship twice.
'I am thrilled, but also a bit disappointed for Rory, who is a great friend,' Horschel said. 'It took a lot of luck and effort to win today.'
South Africa's Lawrence, five shots behind entering the final round, impressed with seven birdies. McIlroy, closing a three-stroke deficit, nailed an eagle on the 17th but only managed a par on the final hole. Despite narrowly missing out, McIlroy remains optimistic about his future, looking ahead to the year's remaining events.
