India set a mammoth victory target of 515 for Bangladesh and then reduced them to 158-4 to close in on a comprehensive victory on day three of the opening test on Saturday.

Bangladesh started strong, but India's sharp catching and key wickets from home hero Ravichandran Ashwin turned the tide. Skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto (51) and all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan (five) were holding the fort for Bangladesh when bad light forced an early close, with the team needing another 357 runs to win.

Earlier, Shubman Gill's unbeaten 119 and Rishabh Pant's (109) return century led India to declare their second innings at 287-4, building on a dominant first innings lead after routing Bangladesh for 149. At the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium, Gill's aggressive approach and Pant's resilience shone through as the pair ensured India's strong position.

Despite initially counter-attacking, Bangladesh's openers' efforts were quelled by a stunning catch from Yashasvi Jaiswal and a three-wicket burst from Ashwin. With wickets falling, Shanto's natural aggressive play brought up his fifty, but Bangladesh's task remains monumental.
