The United States clinched a spot in the Davis Cup Finals quarterfinals by winning both singles matches against Slovakia on Friday. This victory also guaranteed unbeaten Germany's advancement from the same group.
Mackenzie McDonald converted four out of six break points, defeating Lukas Klein 6-4, 6-3. Davis Cup newcomer Brandon Nakashima delivered eight aces to secure a 6-3, 6-3 win over Jozef Kovalik. With these results, the doubles match was deemed unnecessary as the U.S. secured a 2-0 lead in the Group C meeting held on an indoor hard court in Zhuhai, China.
Later Friday, Spain needed a win over France in Group B and Britain sought victory against Argentina in Group D to move into the quarterfinals. A win by Spain would also ensure Australia's progress. Italy also looked to secure a strong qualifying position from Group A against Belgium in Bologna. Four groups are competing in four different cities this week to secure their place in the eight-team Finals slated for November in Malaga, Spain. The top two teams from each group will advance.
