Rory McIlroy, the world's No. 3-ranked golfer, birdied his final three holes on Thursday to shoot a 3-under 68, placing him two strokes off the first-round lead at the Irish Open.
Competing at Royal County Down Golf Club, McIlroy, who aims to win his home tournament for the second time, utilized his local knowledge and strong finish to overcome bogeys on Nos. 14 and 15. His closing stretch included a tap-in birdie at the 16th, a 12-footer at the 17th, and a two-putt birdie from 50 feet at the 18th.
Despite challenging weather conditions, No. 291-ranked Todd Clements led with a 66. Meanwhile, McIlroy emphasized his focus on ball control in difficult winds. Other notable scores included Sami Valimaki, Alejandro Del Rey, and Robert MacIntyre, with the latter aiming to become the first player to win both the Scottish and Irish Opens in the same season.
