Sri Lanka has secured a rare and historic test victory in England, achieving their 219-run target with untroubled ease on the fourth day at The Oval. Pathum Nissanka's unbeaten 127 was instrumental in leading the team to a consolation win in a 2-1 series defeat.
Resuming at 94-1 after an impressive finish to Sunday's final session, Sri Lanka needed a further 125 runs to clinch the match. They accomplished this in just over two hours, losing only one additional wicket to finish at 219-2 and win by eight wickets. Kusal Mendis added nine runs to his overnight score of 30 before being caught by Shoaib Bashir off Gus Atkinson's delivery - England's lone bright spot on a gloomy south London day.
Nissanka, who had earlier scored a rapid 53 not out to set up the decisive chase, initially took a more measured approach. He then reached his second test century off 107 balls before unleashing some powerful shots. Angelo Mathews provided solid support, remaining unbeaten on 32, as Sri Lanka claimed their fourth test victory in England in four decades, a triumph built on their remarkable turnaround on Sunday when they bowled the hosts out for 156 in 34 overs.
