End of an Era: Repsol and Honda Part Ways After 30 Years in MotoGP
Spanish oil company Repsol will end its sponsorship of the Honda MotoGP team next season, concluding a 30-year partnership filled with numerous championships and wins. Despite significant success, the partnership will end after the 2024 MotoGP season as Honda struggles to stay competitive in recent years.
Spanish oil company Repsol will no longer sponsor the Honda MotoGP team from next season, announced Honda on Sunday. This decision marks the end of an iconic partnership that has lasted three decades.
Repsol first started sponsoring Honda in 1995, leading to immense success, including 15 premier class world championships and numerous victories with legendary riders like Mick Doohan, Valentino Rossi, and Marc Marquez. 'After 30 years of collaboration at the highest level of motorcycle racing, Honda Racing Corporation (HRC) and Repsol will part ways at the conclusion of the 2024 MotoGP world championship,' Honda stated.
The partnership extended beyond simple sponsorship, evolving into a deep collaboration aimed at dominating Grand Prix motorcycling. However, recent years have been challenging for Honda, particularly following Marquez's departure and subsequent struggles to maintain top finishes. Both Joan Mir and Luca Marini have failed to secure a top-10 finish this season.
