Roma Fined by UEFA for Financial Rule Breach

Italian football club AS Roma has been penalized 2 million euros for surpassing the intermediate financial target set for 2023, according to a Friday announcement by UEFA's Club Financial Control Body (CFCB) First Chamber. This punishment follows the introduction of new financial regulations, replacing the older Financial Fair Play (FFP) system.

Under the new cost squad rule, clubs must maintain a ratio of player wages, transfers, and agents' fees capped at 90% or less of the previous year's revenue, with the cap reducing to 80% this season and 70% by 2025. While all clubs met the squad cost ratio limit, Roma narrowly missed its intermediate target, resulting in the fine.

In addition, English club Aston Villa and French club Olympique de Marseille were fined 60,000 euros and 20,000 euros, respectively, for late financial submissions. Turkey's Istanbul Basaksehir also exceeded the financial target and faced multiple penalties, including potential exclusion from the next UEFA club competition and a fine of 100,000 euros.
