Italians Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori won the mixed doubles title at the U.S. Open, defeating Americans Taylor Townsend and Donald Young. This victory marked Errani and Vavassori’s first Grand Slam mixed doubles title. Meanwhile, Young announced his retirement from tennis after their defeat.
Italians Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori clinched the mixed doubles title at the U.S. Open on Thursday with a 7-6(0) 7-5 victory over the unseeded all-American pair Taylor Townsend and Donald Young. This win ended the Americans' impressive run and marked Errani and Vavassori's maiden Grand Slam mixed doubles title.
Errani, a five-time women's doubles Grand Slam champion, and Vavassori achieved this milestone in only their third major tournament together. "It's very special, it's a dream come true to achieve this with Sara," said Vavassori. The Italian duo dominated the tiebreaker in the first set and maintained their momentum to secure their victory in the second set.
For Townsend and Young, the loss signified the end of a long partnership. Young, 35, is set to retire from tennis and switch to pickleball. Despite falling short, Young expressed his content, emphasizing the special bond he shares with Townsend. Townsend also faced disappointment in the women's doubles semi-finals but had prior success with a Wimbledon title alongside her Czech partner Katerina Siniakova.
