Italian Duo Errani and Vavassori Win U.S. Open Mixed Doubles Title
Italians Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori won the U.S. Open mixed doubles title by defeating the unseeded American pair, Taylor Townsend and Donald Young. This victory marks their first Grand Slam mixed doubles title, ending Townsend and Young's long-standing partnership as Young plans to retire.
Italians Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori claimed a 7-6(0), 7-5 victory on Thursday, securing the mixed doubles title at the U.S. Open and ending the all-American pair Taylor Townsend and Donald Young's storybook run.
Five-time women's doubles Grand Slam champion Errani and Vavassori clinched their maiden Grand Slam mixed doubles title in only their third major tournament together, following Wimbledon and the Paris Olympics.
The Italians took an early lead, but the Americans broke back to force a tiebreaker. However, Vavassori and Errani dominated the tiebreaker and secured a 3-1 lead in the second set. The Americans fought back but couldn't hold on, as the Italians broke in the final game to clinch victory. This defeat marks the end of Townsend and Young's long partnership, with Young set to retire from tennis and switch to pickleball.
