Jack Draper's Nod to Agassi: A Footwear Tribute at the U.S. Open
Britain's Jack Draper paid tribute to American tennis legend Andre Agassi after his quarter-final win at the U.S. Open by wearing Agassi-inspired Nike shoes. Despite the nostalgic nod, Draper humorously admitted he wouldn't wear them for actual play. The event highlighted various notable on-court and off-court shoe styles.
Britain's Jack Draper honored American tennis legend and U.S. Open champion Andre Agassi via post-match footwear following his quarter-final victory on Wednesday. However, fans shouldn't expect him to wear those iconic kicks in the upcoming semi-finals.
The 25th seed in the men's draw took a moment before his on-court victory interview to swap out his game sneakers for a pair of 'hot lava' colored Andre Agassi Nike Air Tech Challenge IIs, the same style the mulleted Agassi wore in the 1990s. While Draper's choice of footwear was fashion-forward, he humorously doubted their functional performance.
'I don't know how the hell he moved with these shoes. Honestly, I can't imagine sliding in these,' Draper remarked, adding that there was 'Absolutely no chance' he would play a match in them. Draper's footwear choice adds to a U.S. Open brimming with both on-court and off-court shoe style, including Frances Tiafoe's custom-made Air Jordan lowtops and Naomi Osaka's match-worn Nikes with Harajuku-inspired bows paired with her tutu 'super suit.'
