Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday expressed heartfelt happiness as the Indian contingent at the ongoing Paris Paralympics crossed the medal tally of the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, highlighting the athletes' dedication, passion, and determination. The Indian team has amassed 21 medals, including three gold, eight silver, and ten bronze, with opportunities to extend their record further.

In the Tokyo edition of the Paralympics (August 24 - September 5, 2021), India achieved its best-ever medal haul with a tally of 19 medals, comprising five gold, eight silver, and six bronze. Celebrating the new milestone on social media platform X, PM Modi wrote, 'India is proud and delighted! Our incredible Paralympic contingent has set a record for the highest-ever medals for our country in any Paralympics. Congrats to each and every player.'

Para-athlete Sachin Khilari clinched the silver medal in the men's shot put F46 final with a 16.32m throw, narrowly missing the top spot by 0.6m. On Monday and Tuesday, the Indian contingent secured 13 medals, jumping the tally to a record 20. In an impressive showing, Avani Lekhara earned India's first gold in the women's 10m air rifle, while multiple other athletes bagged silver and bronze medals across various events, including para-shooting, athletics, archery, and badminton.

Continuing the medal spree, Nishad Kumar won silver in the men's high jump T47 with a 2.04m leap, and Yogesh Kathuniya added another silver in men's discus throw F56. Sumit Antil defended his gold in men's javelin throw F64 with a record-breaking performance. Additionally, Indian para-shuttlers and sprinters brought home several medals, reflecting a strong and inspiring performance at the Paris Paralympics 2024.
