On Friday, August 23, 2024, the sparse crowd at the ANFA Complex in Kathmandu, Nepal, waited eagerly and were rewarded with a dramatic finish in the SAFF U20 Championship. In the 95th minute, substitute Manglenthang Kipgen seized the ball from Adam Shiyaan and expertly placed it in the bottom corner, clinching a 1-0 victory for India. This win propelled India into the semi-finals with an all-win record in the group stage.

Just a year ago, Kipgen was a marginal player in the SAFF U19 Championships, rarely getting minutes on the pitch. Despite limited playtime, he showcased his prowess, notably scoring twice in the final against Pakistan and earning the Most Valuable Player award. Kipgen's limited starting opportunities continue to challenge him, but he remains undeterred.

The 19-year-old footballer from Zalenphai village in Manipur once dreamt of becoming an IAS officer, a dream shared by his family. However, he was drawn to football and devoted himself to the sport. Recalling his childhood, Kipgen fondly remembers playing barefoot in rain and shine, an experience he finds liberating.

As India prepares to face Bangladesh in the semi-final, Kipgen hopes to be in the starting line-up. Regardless of the coach's decisions, his focus remains on maximizing every opportunity. The semi-final match is scheduled for Monday at 2:45 PM IST at the ANFA Complex, and will be streamed live on the Sportzworkz YouTube channel.
