Rory McIlroy's tee shot on the par-5 17th hole at Castle Pines ended up in the rough, and his 3-wood landed in the water, encapsulating a tough day for him during the PGA Tour postseason.

Despite recovering to make a par on the hole, McIlroy finished with a 1-under 71 on Friday at the BMW Championship, trailing the leader by 10 strokes.

In a subdued moment of frustration, McIlroy flung his 3-wood casually after a three-putt bogey on the 16th hole. The club ended up in the water again, reminiscent of a more dramatic episode at Doral in 2015, where he threw a 3-iron into a lake, later retrieved by scuba divers hired by former President Donald Trump.
