Jamie Smith's maiden test century gave England a 122-run advantage over Sri Lanka on day three of the first test at Old Trafford on Friday. Early in the day, Chris Woakes and Gus Atkinson dismantled Sri Lanka's lineup, leaving the visitors struggling at 10-2 before lunch.

Smith, who scored 111 off 148 balls, displayed excellent composure against Sri Lanka's bowlers, crafting his first test century in his fourth match since debuting against the West Indies last month. He marked the achievement by becoming the youngest wicketkeeper to score a test hundred for England.

Atkinson departed shortly after for 20, followed by Smith who was caught out by wicketkeeper Dinesh Chandimal. England's total reached 358 thanks to tail-enders Mark Wood and Matthew Potts. Sri Lanka, however, faced a difficult start with Nishan Madushka out for a duck and Kusal Mendis following, leaving the team deep in trouble.
