Ons Jabeur, the 2022 U.S. Open women's runner-up, announced her withdrawal from this year's tournament on Thursday due to a debilitating shoulder injury.

Jabeur, who was seeded No. 17 in the tournament set to begin on Monday, will be replaced by Elise Mertens, now the No. 33 seed according to the U.S. Tennis Association.

Injuries have plagued Jabeur recently, forcing her to pull out of prior hard-court events and affecting her performance. She confirmed via Instagram that her shoulder hasn't healed sufficiently to compete at Flushing Meadows. The Tunisian also notably reached the Wimbledon finals in both 2022 and 2023.
