Futoshi Ikeda has stepped down from his position as the head coach of the Japanese women's national soccer team following the Japan Football Association's decision not to extend his contract. This move comes after the team's quarter-final exit at the recent Olympic Games.

Ikeda, 53, led the Nadeshiko to the quarter-finals of the Women's World Cup last year. They failed to improve on that performance in Paris earlier this month, losing 1-0 in extra time to eventual gold medallists the United States. In a statement from the Japan Football Association (JFA), Ikeda expressed gratitude to the players, staff, and supporters. He reflected on the team's growth and shared his desire to reach new heights.

Ikeda's tenure included notable successes, such as winning the Asian under-19 title in 2017 and the under-20 world title in 2018. However, despite some high points like the 4-0 victory over Spain in the World Cup group stage, his tenure ultimately did not meet the nation's high expectations, which were set by the 2011 World Cup triumph. JFA chief Miyamoto Tsuneyasu praised Ikeda for creating team unity and believed players under his guidance would continue to develop Japanese women's soccer.
