In a heartfelt tribute, former England cricket captain Joe Root praised late cricket legend Graham Thorpe, acknowledging that his own illustrious career would not have been possible without Thorpe's invaluable support and mentorship. Root, along with his teammates, will honor Thorpe before the first Test match against Sri Lanka by applauding and showing a tribute video at Old Trafford Stadium. Broadcaster Sky Sports will similarly pay tribute to the late cricketer during their coverage.

Thorpe tragically passed away at the age of 55 on August 4 after battling severe depression and anxiety. Making his international debut in 1993, Thorpe became a cornerstone of English cricket in the late 90s and early 2000s, playing 100 Test matches and scoring 6744 runs at an impressive average of 44.66. He also contributed significantly in ODIs with 2380 runs. Root reflected on Thorpe's immense influence, both as a player and later as a coach, describing him as a 'complete batter' and likening him to a rock star for his all-rounded abilities.

Recalling their long-standing relationship, Root spoke about his close interactions with Thorpe, especially when Thorpe transitioned into coaching with the England Lions in 2010. Root attributed much of his own and his teammates' success to Thorpe's guidance and dedicated coaching approach. He highlighted how Thorpe worked differently with each player, focusing on personalized coaching methods that contributed significantly to England's batting prowess. Root fondly remembered Thorpe's off-field lessons and the special, supportive bond they shared, emphasizing Thorpe's lasting impact on English cricket.
