Carlos Alcaraz has issued an apology for his actions during his loss to Gael Monfils at the Cincinnati Open. The four-time Grand Slam winner, in an uncharacteristic display of frustration, destroyed his racket by smashing it on the court during the third set.
Posting in Spanish on X, Alcaraz admitted that his attitude was inappropriate and that he should not have acted in such a manner. The 21-year-old acknowledged the difficulty of maintaining self-control when emotions run high and promised to work on preventing similar incidents in the future.
Alcaraz, who recently earned a silver medal at the Paris Olympics and was playing his first match since then, described the encounter as the worst match of his career. He is now focusing on preparing for the U.S. Open, which commences on August 26 in New York.
