Shocking Upset: Vinesh Phogat Disqualified from Olympics for Being Overweight
In a stunning turn of events, Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat was disqualified from the Olympics due to being overweight by 100 grams before her women's 50kg final. This unfortunate mishap leaves her without a medal, a significant blow after making history by reaching the gold medal bout.
In a stunning reversal of fortunes, Vinesh Phogat was disqualified from the Olympics on Wednesday after being found overweight ahead of her women's 50kg final, leaving her without a medal just hours after nearing an unprecedented gold.
On Tuesday night, Vinesh made history as the first Indian woman wrestler to reach the gold medal bout in the event.
"She was found overweight by 100 grams this morning. The rules do not allow this and she has been disqualified," an Indian coach stated.
Confirming the development, the Indian Olympic Association requested privacy for the wrestler, competing in her third Olympics.
"It is with regret that the Indian contingent shares news of the disqualification of Vinesh Phogat from the women's Wrestling 50kg class. Despite the best efforts by the team through the night, she weighed in a few grams over 50kg this morning," the IOA said.
The IOA requested respect for Vinesh's privacy and asked to focus on the ongoing competitions. According to international rules, any wrestler found overweight at weigh-in ends up at the bottom of the final standings.
Vinesh had defeated defending champion Yui Susaki of Japan to reach the finals and was set to face American Sarah Ann Hildebrandt in the final bout.
This wasn't the only weight-related disqualification in the 50kg category, as Italy's Emanuela Liuzzi was also forced to forfeit her preliminary bout after being found overweight on Tuesday.
