Everton Signs Irish Defender Jake O'Brien in £17 Million Deal

Everton has secured the signing of Ireland centre-back Jake O'Brien from Ligue 1 club Olympique Lyonnais, the Premier League outfit revealed on Tuesday. The Merseyside team did not disclose financial specifics, but British media peg the deal at approximately £17 million ($21.82 million).

The 23-year-old defender, who began his career with Cork City, moved to Crystal Palace in 2021. After loan stints at Swindon Town and RWD Molenbeek, O'Brien made 32 appearances for Lyon across all competitions since joining the French side last year. "Jake further strengthens our talented core of centre-backs and adds competition to our squad, which can help us continue to progress," commented Everton manager Sean Dyche.

Describing O'Brien as young but experienced, both domestically and internationally, Dyche added, "He has many impressive attributes to become a top-quality player for Everton in the Premier League." Everton will kick off their Premier League season against Brighton & Hove Albion at Goodison Park on August 17.
