FC Goa head coach Manolo Marquez has been appointed as the head coach of the Indian men's senior football team, announced the All India Football Federation (AIFF) on Saturday. He replaces Igor Stimac, a former Croatian footballer, who was dismissed in June after the team's poor performance in the FIFA World Cup 2026 qualification campaign. Senior officials of the AIFF held a virtual meeting to terminate Stimac's services.

The appointment was decided during AIFF's Executive Committee meeting, chaired by President Kalyan Chaubey, at Football House in New Delhi. Key officials including AIFF Vice President NA Haris, Treasurer Kipa Ajay, and multiple committee members attended. Special invitees included Ajit Banerjee, President of the Indian Football Association (West Bengal), and others. Marquez was selected as the new head coach with immediate effect.

For the 2024-25 season, Marquez will manage both FC Goa and the Indian national team concurrently before transitioning to the national role full-time. AIFF President Chaubey expressed gratitude to FC Goa for their cooperation, and Marquez emphasized his attachment to India and commitment to bringing success to the national team. At 55, Marquez is experienced in Indian football, having previously coached Hyderabad FC and led them to an ISL Cup victory in 2021-22.

In other developments, the Executive Committee resolved to appoint Anilkumar Prabhakaran as the AIFF Secretary General, following a recommendation from President Chaubey. Anilkumar's appointment is subject to standard internal protocols and will take effect upon their completion.
