Dr. Deepa Malik, a pioneering Paralympian and the first Indian woman to secure a medal at the Paralympic Games, has been named the sub-regional representative for South Asia by the Asian Paralympic Committee (APC). This historic appointment, ratified during the 34th Executive Board meeting of the APC, marks a noteworthy advancement for gender diversity and athlete-focused leadership within para-sports.

With Dr. Malik's inclusion, the number of female representatives on the APC Executive Board rises to five, the highest in the organization's history. Tasked with representing South Asian nations, she will advocate for the development and promotion of para-sports across the region. Dr. Malik's extensive background, exceptional skills, and steadfast dedication to para-sports position her as an outstanding choice for this prestigious role. Majid Rashed, President of the APC, highlighted the significance of this diversity, stating, "Having more women during our Executive Board meetings is a very positive step forward, especially when one voice is of someone with the experience, skills, and wisdom of Dr. Deepa Malik. The APC acknowledges Dr. Deepa's extensive experience and is confident that our members from the South Asia Subregion will be excellently represented by you on the APC Executive Board."

Expressing her excitement, Dr. Malik said, "It is an honor and an opportunity for me to represent South Asia and be a voice for our region. India has long been a flag bearer of 'Vasudev Kutumbakam' and now is also the right time to step forward in contributing to this one big family. This leadership role allows me to work with neighboring countries to create a cohesive effort for the overall upliftment and development of para-sports in our region."

Dr. Malik's appointment is also in line with the Paralympic Committee of India's broader mission to foster excellence and inclusivity in para-sports. PCI President Devendra Jhajharia congratulated her, stating, "This is a defining moment for Indian Paralympics. It is the right step in the overall development of sports in this region.
