The Colombo Strikers claimed a commanding 9-wicket victory over the Jaffna Kings in the ongoing Lanka Premier League 2024 at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Sunday. Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Shadab Khan spearheaded the triumph, as the Strikers chased down an underwhelming target of 110 in a mere 9.5 overs. This critical win keeps the Thisara Perera-led squad firmly in third place on the points table, boasting three wins from six matches.

Commencing the chase, opener Angelo Perera set an aggressive tone with a swift 16 off 8 balls before his early dismissal. His partner, Gurbaz, alongside Muhammad Waseem, maintained a high scoring rate despite interruptions by rain. By the end of the powerplay, the Strikers were firmly in control at 66/1, with Gurbaz showcasing his formidable form. An unbeaten partnership of 87 runs from 45 balls between Gurbaz and Waseem secured the target inside 10 overs, significantly improving their net run rate.

Gurbaz, the dynamic Afghan batter, remained unbeaten on 57 off 33 balls, smashing four sixes and four boundaries. He reached his fifty in just 30 deliveries. With crucial support from Waseem, who scored 35 off 18 balls, the Strikers concluded their innings at 112/1 with 61 balls to spare. Previously, Colombo Strikers' bowlers delivered a clinical performance, limiting the Jaffna Kings to 109/9 in their 20 overs. The decision to bowl first proved fruitful, with Binura Fernando and Shadab Khan leading the charge. Shadab Khan's remarkable spell of 4 for 10 from four overs, making him the league's highest wicket-taker, was instrumental in breaking Jaffna's middle order. Other key bowlers included Matheesha Pathirana, Thisara Perera, and Isitha Wijesundera, each contributing to the tight bowling effort.
