Railway Board Freezes Trade Union Benefits Ahead of Elections

The Railway Board, starting August 30, has halted all benefits to recognized trade unions as part of the election process for the Secret Ballot Election (SBE) scheduled on December 4-6, 2024. Existing facilities such as office premises and card passes cannot be used for electoral purposes. Violations will be treated as corrupt practices.

The Railway Board has initiated a freeze on benefits to recognized trade unions, effective August 30, as a step towards conducting the Secret Ballot Election (SBE) scheduled for December 4-6, 2024.

In a circular addressed to all zones on August 30, the board specified that all existing trade unions are prohibited from using railway facilities and privileges, including office premises and card passes, for electoral purposes to ensure a level playing field.

The board also stated that trade unions could use telephones and mobiles, provided they bear the costs during the election period until fresh recognition is granted. Any misuse of these benefits will be deemed as corrupt electoral practices.
