The National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT), based in Chennai, is being called upon to develop vertical expertise and shift from imports to indigenous solutions, according to a top official.

Union Ministry of Earth Sciences Secretary, M Ravichandran, emphasized the necessity for NIOT to engage in capacity building by collaborating with both academia and industry. The goal is to turn innovative ideas into tangible products and gradually transition from reliance on imports to local development.

Ravichandran made these remarks while launching a web portal dedicated to Marine Microbial Repository in India, part of the Deep Ocean Mission. He praised NIOT's work in niche fields of engineering and technology, acknowledging their societal impact and progress in the blue economy. Projects like desalination in Lakshadweep and ballast water treatment are also noteworthy highlights.
