In a show of community solidarity, residents of Guwahati's Bharalamukh area protested on Saturday against plans to cut down trees for a new bridge. The demonstrators, including senior citizens and youths, formed a human chain, demanding balance between urban development and environmental preservation.
The protest was organized by a citizens' coordination committee, voicing concerns about the exclusion of local input in planning the bridge at Railway Gate no 5. Speakers at the event underscored the importance of preserving the natural landscape, which they consider a historic hallmark of their neighborhood.
The gathering follows recent uproar over potential tree felling in Dighalipukhuri for a flyover project. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma defended development plans, citing tree transplantation efforts, while urging media not to sensationalize individual tree losses.
