Amid escalating air pollution levels in Delhi, the traffic police have implemented a significant penalty regime, amassing Rs 47 crore in fines for pollution certificate violations between October 1 and 24, as per an official statement on Wednesday.
The enforcement has led to over 47,000 challans issued to non-compliant motorists, each fined Rs 10,000 for lacking a valid pollution under control (PUC) certificate. This initiative is part of a special drive launched this month, targeting various city locations known for traffic congestion.
The campaign, ongoing with surprise vehicle checks, underscores the perennial issue of vehicular pollution in a city notorious for poor air quality. The Delhi Traffic Police aims to foster compliance with emissions standards through rigorous monitoring and enforcement.
