Taiwan issued a land warning on Wednesday as Typhoon Kong-rey approaches, threatening to unleash heavy rain and powerful winds across the island. The typhoon is expected to make landfall late Thursday morning on Taiwan's less populous, mountainous eastern coast in Taitung County.
According to Taiwan's Central Weather Administration, Kong-rey will then move southward across Taiwan, enter the Taiwan Strait, and proceed towards China. Subtropical Taiwan regularly faces typhoons, with the most recent, Typhoon Krathon, resulting in four fatalities earlier this month in the island's south.
The impact of such typhoons highlights the island's vulnerability to extreme weather events and the persistent threats they pose to life and property in the region.
