Taiwan Braces for Typhoon Kong-rey's Fierce Impact
Taiwan is set to experience Typhoon Kong-rey on Thursday, with warnings issued for its east coast. The storm, equating to a Category 4 hurricane, is expected to bring heavy rain and winds, particularly affecting Taitung county and other coastal regions, before moving towards China.
Taiwan is bracing for the landfall of Typhoon Kong-rey on Thursday, specifically on its less populated east coast. Authorities issued warnings on Wednesday as the powerful typhoon threatens to lash the island with torrential rain and high winds.
Kong-rey, currently packing gusts exceeding 230 kph (143 mph), has intensified to a Category 4 hurricane. Forecasts suggest further intensification before it strikes Taitung county. It is projected to move over Taiwan's southern region, then cross into the Taiwan Strait heading towards China, according to Taiwan's Central Weather Administration.
Eastern Taiwan, particularly its mountainous areas, could face up to 1.2 metres (3.9 feet) of rainfall and potential coastal devastation. Forecaster Stan Chang emphasized the atypical timing for such a strong typhoon, citing conducive conditions like warmer sea temperatures. The north, including Taipei, anticipates heavy rains through Thursday.
