Hurricane Oscar: Path of Destruction Across the Caribbean
Hurricane Oscar has made landfall on Great Inagua island in the Bahamas. It's projected to hit Guantanamo or Holguin in Cuba by Sunday. Current wind speeds are 80 mph. Though expected to weaken, it could still become a tropical storm as it moves north of Cuba and affects the Bahamas further.
Hurricane Oscar has slammed into Great Inagua island in the Bahamas and is heading towards Cuba's Guantanamo and Holguin regions, according to the latest advisory from the U.S. National Hurricane Center.
Currently positioned roughly 150 miles east-northeast of Guantanamo, Oscar boasts maximum sustained winds of 80 mph. The hurricane is expected to lose strength upon reaching Cuba but may still impact the central Bahamas as a tropical storm early next week.
This development occurs as Cuba faces daunting challenges in restoring power from its most extensive blackout in recent years. In response, the Bahamian government has downgraded the hurricane warning for the Turks and Caicos Islands to a tropical storm warning, although alerts remain active for other regions.
