Typhoon Krathon Batters Taiwan with Deadly Winds and Rain

According to Taiwan's National Fire Agency, an elderly man in Hualien died after falling from a ladder, while another driver in Taitung collided with fallen rocks. With winds reaching up to 209 kph, Krathon is poised to make landfall on Taiwan's crowded west coast.

In preparation, authorities have shuttered schools, government offices, and cancelled flights. Residents in Kaohsiung, a city of 2.7 million, are bracing for the worst, as markets stand empty and streets are deserted. Almost 40,000 military personnel are on alert to assist in rescue operations.
