Record Rains Add to Noto Region's Woes After Major Earthquake

Central Japan's Noto region, still recovering from a major New Year's Day earthquake, has been hit by record rainfall. The deluge has resulted in at least one death, evacuation orders for tens of thousands, and blackouts impacting over 6,000 households, aggravating an already dire situation.

The torrential rains led to missing person reports, including four quake reconstruction workers, with emergency services overwhelmed by rescue calls. Wajima and neighboring Suzu recorded unprecedented hourly rainfall, turning streets into rivers and submerging vehicles.

People who had lost their homes to the earthquake were forced to seek refuge once again. The government has mobilized military, police, and firefighters for rescue operations, as the region grapples with this dual catastrophe.
