India Takes Giant Leap in Seaweed Cultivation with New Centre of Excellence
The Department of Fisheries has named ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute as a Centre of Excellence for seaweed cultivation. The facility in Tamil Nadu will focus on research, development, training, and sustainability assessments, promoting India's role in the global seaweed industry and aiding coastal livelihoods.

The Department of Fisheries under the Union Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying has designated the ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute as a Centre of Excellence for seaweed cultivation.
This new centre, located at the regional hub in Mandapam, Tamil Nadu, will serve as the cornerstone for research, development, training, and capacity building in the field of seaweed cultivation.
According to the CMFRI release, the centre aims to promote sustainable farming practices, address key challenges, and improve India's standing in the global seaweed industry. Dr. Grinson George, Director of CMFRI, emphasized the importance of this development in unlocking the country's potential. He highlighted plans for a seed bank to preserve indigenous genetic diversity, environmental impact assessments to ensure sustainability, and various training programs for farmers and entrepreneurs.
