Nearly 200 people have died in Vietnam in the aftermath of Typhoon Yagi, with more than 125 still missing, as flash floods and landslides wreak havoc, state media reported Thursday.

Vietnam's VNExpress newspaper confirmed that 197 people have died, 128 remain unaccounted for, and over 800 have sustained injuries. The death toll surged earlier this week when a flash flood obliterated the hamlet of Lang Nu in northern Vietnam's Lao Cai province on Tuesday.

Rescue teams worked tirelessly throughout Wednesday in search of survivors. As of Thursday morning, 53 villagers were still missing, and seven more bodies were recovered, raising the hamlet's death toll to 42.
