Two individuals lost their lives when a two-storey house crumbled amid heavy rainfall in Maharashtra's Gondia district early Tuesday morning, according to officials.
Persistent rain over the past 24 hours saw Kamtha circle in Gondia tehsil record 292.3 mm of precipitation, prompting the Regional Meteorological Centre in Gapur to declare a red alert for the district. The house collapse occurred in Rameshwaram Colony, Fulchurtola area, killing the two victims, as confirmed by district disaster management officer Rajan Choubey.
Emergency teams including the fire brigade and police have been deployed for search and rescue operations. Several city localities have experienced flooding, with the disaster relief team rescuing three stranded individuals at Sirpur's temple. Additionally, a petrol tanker was swept away by Bagh River's strong currents. Significant road closures and damage to homes and crops have been reported across the district.
In the 24 hours leading up to 8 am, Deori received 210.3 mm of rainfall, Gondia 207.9 mm, Salekasa 195.9 mm, and Sadak Arjuni 187 mm, officials noted.
