Union Jal Shakti Minister CR Paatil has recommended prioritizing groundwater recharge rather than large dam constructions, which can be expensive and time-consuming.
Speaking at the launch of the 'Jal Sanchay Jan Bhagidari' initiative in Surat, Paatil highlighted that almost all possible dam sites are already taken, making new constructions impractical.
He cited the long-delayed Polavaram project as an example of the challenges faced by dam construction and underscored the effectiveness of rainwater harvesting and groundwater recharge initiatives. Paatil urged community involvement and recognized existing efforts by municipalities and entities like Sumul Dairy in water conservation projects in Gujarat.
