A new report by the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety, backed by insurance companies, suggests critical steps to prevent grassland wildfires from escalating into urban conflagrations. The report analyzes the devastating August 8, 2023, wildfire that ravaged Lahaina, Maui, claiming 102 lives.

The study found that creating fuel breaks, using fire-resistant materials, and reducing flammable pathways could provide crucial time for firefighters. "It's a layered issue. Everyone should work together," said lead researcher Faraz Hedayati, emphasizing the importance of collaboration between government leaders, community groups, and property owners.

Examining homes that survived the fire, the report highlights the importance of defensible spaces and noncombustible fences. One home was saved due to its surrounding 35 feet of well-maintained grass and a paved driveway. Another was partially protected by a stone fence, breaking the fire's path. The findings underline the importance of connections and pathways in mitigating wildfire risks.
