U.S. Climate Envoy John Podesta to Visit China for Crucial Climate Talks
U.S. climate envoy John Podesta will visit China to discuss climate change and environment issues. The talks aim to bridge gaps between the world’s two biggest greenhouse gas emitters. Podesta will meet Chinese counterpart Liu Zhenmin in a critical round of climate negotiations.
U.S. climate envoy John Podesta is scheduled to visit China for three days starting Wednesday to engage in crucial discussions on climate change, according to China's environment ministry. This visit aims to address financial issues and other critical concerns between the world's top two greenhouse gas emitters.
Pacts between the U.S. and China have historically played a significant role in achieving global consensus on climate issues. However, experts remain skeptical about the potential progress of this week's talks. Podesta will meet his Chinese counterpart Liu Zhenmin in what marks the second round of formal climate talks between the two nations since Podesta succeeded John Kerry as the U.S. envoy.
Recent statements from U.S. National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi highlighted the necessity of taking concrete steps to combat the climate crisis, signaling support for further discussions. The U.S. is also advocating for more ambitious climate targets from China, especially with the impending deadline for new climate contributions to the United Nations early next year.
