Emergency Management and Recovery Minister Mark Mitchell has announced the allocation of $16.8 million from Budget 2024 to support councils in accelerating recovery efforts following the severe weather events of 2023.

"The funding, sourced from the Cyclone Recovery Capability Fund introduced in Budget 2024, will address councils' need for additional expertise to expedite their priority recovery projects," Minister Mitchell stated.

The funds will be distributed among 12 councils, supporting 50 initiatives aimed at delivering faster outcomes for communities. These initiatives include bringing in additional geotechnical expertise to speed up decision-making on landslide-affected properties, and allocating resources to accelerate the recovery of roads, bridges, and flood protection projects in the hardest-hit regions.

"Recovery is a continuous process, and we recognize the significant efforts of councils in implementing the necessary measures to aid their communities," said Mitchell. "Our government remains committed to supporting these councils and their communities as they rebuild and recover from last year's severe weather impacts."

Mitchell emphasized the government's clear directive for faster completion of recovery projects to provide communities with greater certainty about their future. He also highlighted the importance of strengthening resilience through these projects to mitigate the impact of future weather events and protect communities from flooding.
