In an unprecedented move, expert teams have been sent to six high-risk glacial lakes in Arunachal Pradesh to evaluate the potential for glacial lake outburst floods (GLOF) and implement preventive measures, according to official sources.
The high-altitude lakes in the Tawang and Dibang Valley districts, over 11,000 feet above sea level, are among 27 glacial lakes identified by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) as high-risk.
The mission, led by local authorities and backed by the National Institute of Mountaineering and Adventure, aims to complete comprehensive assessments and enable the installation of early warning systems and automatic weather stations to protect downstream lives and properties.
