Hurricane Ernesto made landfall in Bermuda at 4:30 a.m., Atlantic Standard Time (0830 GMT) on Saturday, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center.
The storm's epicenter was predicted to depart Bermuda later on Saturday, moving near or east of Newfoundland, Canada, by Monday night.
With maximum sustained winds now at 85 miles per hour (138 kilometers per hour), Ernesto is forecast to weaken. It is the fifth named storm in what is expected to be a particularly intense hurricane season.
