Tropical Storm Shanshan unleashed torrential rain on Japan's Shizuoka area on Sunday, located 180 km southwest of Tokyo, as weather officials cautioned that the storm would persist for several more days.
Shanshan, with winds reaching 65 kph (40 mph), made landfall on Thursday, leaving behind a trail of landslides, flooded rivers, torn branches, and scattered debris. Residents in southwestern Japan were busy cleaning mud-clogged homes and disposing of broken appliances.
The storm has been linked to at least six fatalities, including three individuals trapped in a mudslide. One person is reported missing and 127 people have sustained injuries, according to Japanese public broadcaster NHK, which aggregates reports from local authorities.
