Kempegowda International Airport, operated by Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), has reached a historic achievement by becoming the first airport in Asia to receive Airports Council International's (ACI) highest Level five accreditation, officials announced on Friday.

Bangalore Airport has achieved an astonishing 95.6 per cent reduction in Scope 1 and 2 Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions. This milestone signifies the highest emission reduction by any Indian airport, accomplished seven years ahead of the initial 2030 target.

The accreditation is effective from May 5, 2024.

BLR Airport has set new standards in its journey towards decarbonisation by transitioning to 100 per cent renewable electricity and initiating sustainable mobility and green infrastructure projects. To offset remaining emissions, the airport has procured carbon units approved by ACI from verified carbon removal projects.

Looking ahead to 2030, BLR Airport has vowed to offset residual emissions through in-house green landscape projects, demonstrating a long-term commitment to sustainability. 'We are delighted to be the first airport in Asia to attain ACI's Level five accreditation and to lead with the highest emission reduction by an Indian airport,' said Hari Marar, Managing Director and CEO of BIAL.

BIAL noted that the airport's future commitments go beyond Scope one and two emissions. By aligning with ACI's stringent Level five carbon accreditation standards, BLR Airport aims to achieve Net Zero GHG emissions by 2050, including Scope three emissions.
