ISRO successfully launched its third developmental flight of the Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV) on Friday. The mission, known as SSLV-D3, carried a primary Earth Observation Satellite EOS-08, which is intended for satellite-based surveillance, disaster and environmental monitoring, and fire detection among other applications.

The launch represents a significant milestone, as it concludes the SSLV development project and opens the door for industry collaboration through NewSpace India Ltd, ISRO's commercial arm. The SSLV-D3 launch had been rescheduled by a day and finally lifted off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre at a pre-fixed time of 9.17 am, achieving its mission objectives.

Friday's mission also aligns with ISRO's aim to provide cost-effective, flexible, and rapid launch options for small satellites. The SSLV rocket, smaller and cheaper than its PSLV counterpart, is designed to place satellites weighing up to 500 kg into Low Earth Orbits. The successful launch lays the groundwork for future commercial endeavors, including a scheduled 2026 launch for an Australian satellite.
